Let's talk about window treatments!! Almost every room we design incorporates custom window treatments, and for good reason. Not only are they functional, but they're also great for adding depth and dimension to a room -- an easy addition that will both complete and transform your space! Thanks to our friends at The Shade Store we always find just what we need for our design projects! Here’s a few tips and tricks for selecting the right window treatments for your space. 

With everything in design, scale and proportions are key!

Make your space look bigger and more proportional by hanging drapes at least 10-12 inches above the window frame or sometimes all the way to the ceiling depending on your ceiling height. Also try extending your curtain rod out 6-8 inches on each side so as not to crowd the window. 

Choosing the right color & pattern.

We love incorporating pattern play into our designs, but you don’t want to get too wild that the drapery takes away from the entire design. Incorporating trim or selecting something with an unexpected detail such as the stripes in Kelley’s great room is a great way to add interest to your otherwise neutral drapery. The Shade Store also has amazing borders available to add that extra attention to detail.

Cross referencing your color palette is important. When selecting your drapery fabrics at The Shade Store, we recommend bringing paint or wallpaper samples, or any finish selections that the window treatments may need to coordinate with. 

In bathrooms, we love roller shades or custom roman shades. Kelley wanted to keep her bathroom calm and serene with a neutral fabric but in other design projects, we love adding a pop of character with a fun patterned fabric. Adding Drama!

People often default to linen and cotton blends for drapery, but with every HON design project, we love mixing it up! Kelley’s dining room was the perfect opportunity to add an unexpected touch of drama with charcoal velvet drapery. Give us all the moody dinner party vibes!

Luckily, The Shade Store has professional measurement and installation teams nationwide, so they take the stress out of it! But, a few of our general rules we follow when measuring for window treatment include; We like our drapery to slightly brush the floor so there’s no puddling and opening and closing is done with ease; Roller shades should fill the window as much as possible so a very precise measurement (down to the sixteenth of an inch!) is crucial!
